Steps Parents Can Take to Help Their Overweight or Obese Children




Child obesity is one epidemic that has been in the limelight in recent times. Every parent needs to be concerned and informed about this problem. What is the reason children are getting overweight or obese? It's for the same basic reasons as many adults have a problem with their weight. It comes down to how much you eat relative to the amount of physical activity you get. Many parents use food as a reward, and this can be a problem if your child is overweight. Rewards often consist of sweets, and this teaches kids to associate these treats with praise and accomplishment. Find better, healthier ways to reward your child so that the habits they develop won't cause them to have weight problems later on. You might plan some family activities that are fun, active and healthy. You can try coming up with a reward system wherein the size or scope of the reward is relative to the accomplishment. For reaching a target weight, for instance, a nice reward can be a trip to your child's favorite amusement park. Encouraging your kids to eat healthy and low calorie snacks can go a long way at preventing or reversing a weight problem. You want to break your child's habit of snacking on junk food and replace it with healthier alternatives. There are many healthier alternatives, such as fruit, nuts, yogurt, carrots and celery. Compared to junk food, these alternatives won't be as tempting to your child, but it's important that you keep working on your child and help him or her eat better. Pack trail mix with your child's lunch and keep such healthy snacks within easy reach at home.

It's very typical for adults and kids to get into the habit of eating big meals. Parents may not thing much of it, but they're actually causing their child to develop this habit whenever they tell their child to finish the food on their plate. If your child is way below the ideal weight for his or her age, then you'd want your child to be eating more food. But if your child looks like he or she is overweight, make sure the food on his or her plate is just enough to satisfy hunger. This can be a big problem when you're eating out or ordering from fast food places. It's a good idea to get your child started on a small meal portion and simply add a little at a time if he or she is still hungry. Don't put huge amounts of food in front of your child because it will only encourage overeating.
